history: | The Garter
Garter Inn stood together with the White Hart almost opposite where the
Statue of Queen Victoria now stands on the High Street. The pubs were
demolished and replaced with the Harte & Garter Hotel, also known at one
point as the Star & Garter. It is said Shakespeare set many scenes from the Merry Wives of Windsor from the Garter Inn
